October update.

I just got back to work after two days off. Man, working sucks! I can spend almost 3 days, locked in my house, just working in my pages and my comic book related projects without any human contact at all. I only see my family when we eat, and then it´s every man for himself. I don´t need to go outside, hell, I don´t like to go out, I just want to stay in my room, drawing, inking, working on my art. That´s all I ask, why can´t it be like that all the time? --oh...yeah, because comics don´t pay shit-- fuck...

Anyway, here´s a peek of what comes out of those labor intensive days. Make sure to look out for it.

Esto es un pequeñito aporte a un blog que sin duda ha caído víctima de mis horarios, compromisos y por qué no, como todo hijo, ha sido desplazado por su hermano menor. Desde luego hablo del también excelente blog Creando Comics: Un viaje por la narrativa visual, proyecto que come casi todo mi tiempo libre, tanto así que cuando tengo algún tiempito me ocupo de él en lugar de sentarme a dibujar un poco.

Por ello es que para tapar agujeros vengo a ofrecerles dos bocetitos que he podido mechar en estos últimos días.

Algo nuevo se está cocinando, pero aún va a llevar un tiempo. No se olviden de visitar ocasionalmente y en todo caso avisarle a algún amigo al que le guste la historieta o de dejar un comentario en cualquiera de las entradas.

El amor de mí amor es mi segundo amor.

This is just a tiny addition in a blog that without any doubt has fallen victim of my schedule, prior engagements and why not, like every son, has been displaced in favor of his younger sibling. I´m talking of course about the also excellent blog about comic book artists “Creando Comics…(Making comics: a journey through visual narrative)”, another project of mine that has been eating almost every single minute off I might have, so much so that whenever I have a small opening I take care of it instead of sitting down to draw.

That´s why I give you two small sketches I´ve been able to do in the last few days, sort of to fill in the gap I guess.

Something new is brewing in the kitchen, but it might take a while. Don´t forget to visit every now and then and maybe even give a heads up to a friend who enjoys comic books, you might even leave a comment in any of the many entries I have for you.

Reportandose desde el exilio.

Ha pasado un buen tiempo desde que subí algo a este blog, no?
La verdad es que he estado bastante ocupado y eso me ha hecho tener poco tiempo para bloggear. Encima de todo hoy día la prioridad la tiene el blog de Creando Comics, así que cuando llega la hora de ponerse a trabajar ese proyecto termina acaparando mi tiempo.

En fin, gracias a toda la investigacion que estoy haciendo para ese otro blog me estoy encontrando con una realidad comiquera que me era un poco ajena. Algo que me esta llamando mucho la atención sobre todo en esta ultima semana es el comic chileno. De allí les recomiendo que lean CABRALESA que esta muy bueno y que visiten el sitio de la NGI (Asociación chilena de narrativa gráfica e ilustración) donde van a poder tener acceso a varias cosas que se hacen allá e incluso van a poder ver un excelente programa de TV llamado SinOficiO.

Practicando la tinta.

En este caso el consejo viene por el lado de la tinta, y se trata sobre cómo sacar provecho de algo de mala calidad. No soy ni el patrono de las descargas ni pontifico al respecto, pero sería un hipócrita si no dijera que descargo cosas tanto como cualquier otro. Especialmente cuando considero que la tienda de cómics más cercana la tengo a casi 400 km de distancia y que todo el material que leo es en inglés. 

Me gustan mis revistas pronto y en idioma original, pero no soy muy adepto a andar leyendo en el monitor de la PC. No solo me molesta sino que me resulta contra natura. Si encima de todo sumamos que me gusta leer revistas con notas y libros más bien extensos la idea de estar contemplando un monitor durante muchas horas no me seduce en lo más mínimo. Es ahí cuando el factor “Impresión” entra en juego. Prefiero gastar unos pesos en imprimir o la revista entera o una selección de material de la misma. Lo junto en carpetitas y cuando puedo les imprimo una tapa para que no queden desprolijos.

En este caso la impresora a color de mi trabajo se quedó sin cartucho negro, por lo que imprimió la imagen pero sin dicho color. Unos segundos antes de tirar la impresión a la basura se me prendió la lamparita y dije: ¿Y si relleno yo los negros y de paso practico el entintar sobre el dibujo de otro?

Cierto es que en este caso en particular más que entintar es meramente repasar o llenar algo que no está presente, pero a los efectos de la práctica es casi lo mismo. Voy a usar los elementos de siempre: tinta china, pinceles, rapidograph y pluma. Siempre consideré que la tinta es mi punto más débil, y que me veo forzado a hacerla porque no hay nadie que la haga por mí. Si el día de mañana consigo trabajar con un entintador no voy a volver a tocar jamás un pincel o una pluma.

Yo siempre aconsejo tener a mano un par de dibujos de algún dibujante que nos guste y que estén hechos a lápiz para poder entintar sobre ellos o con una lightbox o con papel manteca. Lo importante es ir agarrándole la mano a las herramientas e ir perdiéndole el miedo a trabajar con la tinta. Este es solo un consejo, pueden trabajar en el formato que quieran y con los materiales que deseen, lo que importa es que se vayan acostumbrando a que en el mundo del cómic el trabajo no siempre termina cuando uno completa los lápices. Y en un mercado harto competitivo como este cuanto más sea capaz de hacer el propio artista, mejores chances de conseguir trabajo va a tener.

Hello all. I just felt like giving up some news. I´m currently working in two great things, firts of, a new story for my friends at Hadron Colliderscope with the Uber talented writer mister Geoff Wessel (everybody please stand up and clap!). A very exciting story involving aliens, humans, ships and all that good stuff. I´m also pleased to tell you that the script for HTSWR #8 has been delivered and corrected and it´s ready to go into production (which means, drawing it) and it´s a very funny yet a bit dark story. I love and I´m sure all our faithfull readers will love it too. And because I´m back at the drawing table I´ve taking on making little sketches on the side of the board, just to release some pressure when the page gets a bit congested. With all that said I leave you a little version of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin´s padawan in the Clone Wars cartoon. I´m a HUGE Star Wars buff, yup, even of that timeline altering cartoon. Anyway...more to come.

Emotional Bum

Tonight I feel particularly blue. My head hurts and my eyes burn. I feel totally down and gloomy, so I decided to share my misery with the world, as usual.
It doesn´t happen very often that peolpe ask me how I´m doing or what I´ve been up to, at least not with real interest in finding out, just the occasional: Hey what´s up? that comes up in chit-chat.
Well...this is how I feel, this is how I´ve been. I´ve become an emotional bum.

Se abre un nuevo Blog.

Estoy muy contento de anunciarles que hace unos días está en línea mi nuevo blog. se llama CREANDO COMICS: Un Viaje por la Narrativa Visual y se trata de comics (DUH!) y su autores. Planeo ir posteando notas y entrevistas a varios creadores del medio sobre como son sus procesos a la hora de crear una historieta.

Lejos de tener un tinte histórico sobre la historia del medio a lo que se apunta es a brindar insumos a aquellos nuevos futuros autores que buscan un poco de ayuda o una mano amiga que los guíe en el proceso de aprender un poco más sobre como se hace una historieta. En primera instancia las entrevistas y el contenido está abocado a los dibujantes y sus métodos, no descarto que en algún momento se pueda hacer inclusión de algún guionista ya que son tan importantes en el proceso como los dibujantes. Es solo que mi estatus de artista me hace decantarme por mis pares.

Espero que puedan visitarlo de vez en cuando, está todo hecho en español (con la ocasional palabrita en inglés) y dejen cualquier comentario o duda o sugerencia. El espacio ya esta abierto, la propuesta hecha y el material se va a ir acumulando de a poco. Tengan paciencia ya que aún está todo bajo construcción.

Así comienza la cuenta regresiva...

Salutaciones varias en ésta ocasión, oh abnegado lector. Con motivo del nuevo año que comienza me veo en la obligación de cumplir con una humilde costumbre que vengo implementando desde hace ya varios años. Verás, en vísperas de año nuevo la gente tiene todo tipo de cábalas y rituales inútiles que se supone han de ayudar a hacer del que comienza un año más prospero. Algunos comen pasas, otros uvas, otros tiran baldes con agua, yo no hago ninguna de esas, yo siempre trato de comenzar el año nuevo haciendo algún dibujo a lo largo del primero de enero. No sé bien por qué lo hago, tal vez con el objetivo de augurar un año lleno de trabajos que involucren dibujar o algo por el estilo. En fin, que no lo hago por ser supersticioso, sino que es más bien por costumbrista. Este año depara nuevos proyectos que ya están completos y a la espera de ver la luz y con suerte alguna que otra cosa que se está cocinando en la hornalla trasera. Tiempo al tiempo, ya se han caído más de un proyecto durante el año pasado, así que estoy abierto a un sinfín de nuevas desilusiones en éste año que recién comienza. Sin más que contar por el momento los dejo con éste humilde boceto basado en los personajes de la serie Uncanny X-Force de Marvel. De izquierda a derecha: Deadpool, Wolverine y Fantomex. Lápiz y marcadores sobre papel. Ya les mencioné que estoy escribiendo un libro sobre comics? ¿¡¿NO?!? Bueno…entonces lo haré pronto. More to come.

Some good catch.

At some point I can say I´ve reached some peace of mind. Yes, I´m bored out of my brain with my dead end job, but lucky for me that is gonna be over soon. The good news is that I was finally able to find two books I´ve been looking for a long time now. One of them is called MOVING PICTURES and it’s a graphic novel made by Stuart and Kathryn Immonen. It was published by Top Shelf in 2007 and when I heard of it I was already in Carmelo (a.k.a no-comics-for-you-town). I spent a lot of time and effort trying to find this online, but let´s be honest: If I don´t have a credit card how am I supposed to buy it form amazon?? Here´s where the piracy comes in handy, just that it seemed that no one had scanned it, so it took me a couple years to finally find it. And now I got it…SUCCESS!!!

The second piece that piracy has granted me is the long out of print and very hard to find Bram Stoker´s Dracula, the movie adaptation made by Mignola when the Coppola movie was released. I looked for it all over the place, here, there and everywhere, even people I used to work with at midtown comics had never heard of it. I remember one time, many years ago, I had it as a hard cover book in my hands and decided not to buy it (what a douche). Ever since that day I´ve been looking for it. I perused the web searching for the scans without any results, until last night. There they were, the four issues, waiting for me to download them AND IN ENGLISH!!! The blessing, the relief, what a tremendous catch for one night. This is what I mean when I defend piracy, there is some stuff that for any given reason is impossible to get or too complicated, or too damn expensive, thank god for the scanners that compile all these marvelous things for people like me. How else am I supposed to get a copy of Wertham´s Seduction of the innocent? Scanned my friend…scanned.

P.S: When the scanners don´t deliver I have my brother Ronnie to take of me. He got me two books I was crazy for as birthday presents, Icons: the Jim Lee art for DC comics and wildstorm and the all pencils version of Batman HUSH. Amazing stuff from my amazing brother. Good times ^_^

Eduardo Barreto: 1954 – 2011

Mucho ha pasado en ésta última semana, pero lo más relevante del caso es que el querido Eduardo Barreto nos ha dejado para irse de gira con otros grandes del comic que consideraron que ya habían hecho mucho acá en la tierra y se fueron a marcar nuevos hitos alla arriba con el barba. Eduardo fue siempre un amigo y más que nada uno de mis maestros, mucho (pero mucho)de lo que sé hoy día se lo debo a su cuidado e infinita paciencia y me ha llevado todo este tiempo el juntar las fuerzas para poder hablar de ésta perdida. Mi corazón está muy triste por éste evento, pero como todos sabemos, hay que seguir adelante. Esto no es un adiós Edu, solo un hasta luego.

Guilty Crown.

This is what I´m watching right now. A new anime about the same thing all animes are made about: a young japanese guy that borders the autistic meets young super hot chick and fall immediatly in love with her, but he won´t say anything to her because he´s such a tool. Bad guys of the goverment against a rebelious lot and some mecha in between them. Nothing new there, think of it as Eureka Seven meets Evangelion. Characters are cool and the overall tone of the series seems good enough. Plus I really like the visual aspect of it. Go check it out.

The book about JIM LEE is ready.

Very well, the book on Jim Lee’s work is finished and one thing I neglected to mention earlier is that is all in English. Don’t ask me why, my head it’s just wired to think in English, so everything comes easier that way.

All corrections have been made, so keep this in mind, if you spot something wrong now, you can’t imagine how it looked before. Thing is; I always seem to miss some words while I’m writing them, and those mistakes or typos are corrected by whoever is making the work of a proof reader. In this case I didn’t have one, so I had to actually wait until I saw a printed copy to spot all the things that went awry. I also changed its name to Jim Lee: a sketchbook project for two reasons; a) because it really was just a project, and b) to make it sound less pretentious (some idiot tries to tell me that everything I do it´s incredibly pretentious, while all he does is sit down and scratch his sorry ass…dick).


There were a lot of images that needed to be replaced because the program doesn’t save the actual image on the project, so if you move either the working file or the image that link gets broken, which leaves you with a faulty image and when you print it, it looks like shit. This program (Quarkxpress) it’s pretty easy to use, but there is only so much you can do when all the reference you have next to you is the manual. Sometimes I had to make things time and time again to achieve what I was going for, try that for “trial & error”.


I have to say that coming up with a whole book it’s not an easy task, especially when you are doing it without previous knowledge, I couldn’t figure out how to number the pages for instance, or how to wrap text around some images, but hey, I did the best my limited knowledge allowed me to.

For the future book I’m working on I hope to count with the assistance of a proper designer, I have the whole look for it right in my head, but I don’t want to risk it. Hopefully I will be working with a publisher and the right people to do what I can’t do for myself. This next project has me really excited about it, work it’s already in progress and seems to be having a very positive response from those involved in it. This Jim Lee book was completed from conception to last edit in about two weeks, I’m certain that because we have a lot more time to work on it the next one will be simply awesome.


Now my dear friends, feel free to get this book from HERE, but remember: whatever you do with it it’s you own responsibility, it was never intended for sale, you can print it, you can share it, all I ask for is credit where credit is due and for you to keep me out of trouble.

Right now I feel that dedicating something like this to someone who doesn’t appreciate comics in the least will be a waste of space and time, so It won’t be dedicated to my mum either. But I will thank her for the mates she gave me while I was working… gracias vieja.”

This is what I do when I get bored.

It turns out that I´m planning on writing a book about comic book artists and their methods of work, and because I´m used to be a one-man-show I´m assuming that it´s gonna be me the one that it´s going to end up suffering while designing the whole book. With that in mind I´m diving head first into a new program to design books. Maybe some of you have heard of it , I´m talking about Quarkxpress.

In order to start figuring out how it works and what it can do with it I took it upon myself to create some sort of template of what I want my book to look like, so I grabbed a folder I have filled up with hundreds of drawings made by Jim Lee and decided to put some of them together as a hefty sketchbook.


I plan to have this book completed soon enough, I mean, it´s just compiling the images and writing the occasional text to go with them. How long can it take?

Truth is, I should be doing some stuff for school instead, but fuck that, passion comes first, and if there is something I´m passionate about it´s comics. Fuck school!

Anyhow, there you have the cover of the sketchbook and HERE a chapter as a preview. All this is made just for fun, it´s not going to be for sale or anything, it´s just to get in the mood for when the time comes to work on MY BOOK, a book that is going to be called "Creating comics: a visual journey" and if all the artists involved return the interviews at any time, my co-writer Lord Magnus and I are gonna get cracking with it.
